Honor’s Program in Costa Rica
This is an opportunity for high achieving students to enroll in a challenging, interactive course, enhanced by excursions, guest speakers, and tours. The curriculum is tailored for high-caliber students who are enthusiastic about Conservation and Development with the entire Costa Rica as your classroom. In addition to intensive studies taught by distinguished Nicholls State faculty members, students will participate in activities including a ten day long trip across Costa Rica, visiting different educational institutions to hear lectures by esteemed guest speakers, group activities, direct immersion in cultural and ecological activities at each location. You will also be able to take advantage of an array of optional activities proposed by Visit Costa Rica in each location. This program is open to students from all majors; you do not have to speak Spanish to attend. Priority will be given to students in the Honors Program, but all students with a 3.0 GPA or above are encouraged to apply.
Honors Abroad-Costa Rica is held between fall and spring semesters. The 2007 Honor Program in Costa Rica will begin in San Jose during a fifteen day period. Students will be traveling the entire length of the program, in total visiting six different locations. Students experience the natural history and culture of one of the most environmentally diverse regions of the world; visit the Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, volcanic plains, rain forests and cultural institutions; Honors students will have the opportunity to experience the entire scope of ecosystems present in the country from coast to coast, beginning in the capital city of San Jose, then immersed in the superb Tortuguero National Park on the Caribbean coast, surrounded by rain forest in a series of natural and artificial channels, learn about ongoing projects on the rain forest at Earth University, lectures with vulcanologists on the 6 active volcanos of Costa Rica at Arenal volcano, a visit to the Guanacaste Conservation Area a continuous block 120,000 terrestrial hectares and 70,000 marine hectares of the last remain of the Dry Tropical Forest, four nights at Occidental Allegro Papagayo Hotel, a four star all inclusive resort located in the scenic region of Guanacaste on the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Lodging and conditions will vary at each location, from full service hotels to rustic small Bed & Breakfasts. Students will have access at all times to telephone and internet services. A Visit Costa Rica guide will be with the group the entire length of the program and professors will be handed phones and contacts, and the park rangers and other service providers will stay at all times with the group.
