We will use Dan Buettner's research about the Blue Zones in the world to experience 9 main reasons of longevity and wellness in Nicoya. We will visit indigenous communities and observe how they live, visit and interview elderlies in the Blue Zone of Nicoya, explore native healthy eating habits, breathing techniques, mindfulness, permaculture, nature contact and sound therapy among others. Forest now accounts for 52% of the country’s land surface area, up from 26 % in 1983. Many good decisions have made Costa Rica stand out in the conservation world. Nowadays conservation is very deeply ingrained in our culture and permeates every aspect of our society. 98% of our energy comes from renewable sources. The 3 types of tropical forests present in the world (Rain, Cloud and Dry Forest) can be seen in just one week as well as the two oceans, all in a 10-day program.

Students will be traveling the whole time, visiting examples of forests, turtle nesting sites (We have 6 of the 7 species of sea turtles in the world), diving and learning about ocean conservation programs. Students will visit biological stations run by US universities and learn about their current research and programs. Authentic diving spots to see sea life. Costa Rica is an exception immersed in a very socially afflicted part of the region and stands out in many ways: We have the 2nd oldest democracy in America, no army (allotting those funds towards education that is 30% of our GDP), a very healthy population, a thriving service economy with over 2.000 products, universal health care and the headquarters of Peace University and the International Court of Human Rights.

This 10-15 day program is based mostly in the city and ends with 3 days on the beach. We visit public institutions, hospitals, universities, and the judicial system. It also includes service learning and interactions with amazing figures working with immigrants. Our program has an emphasis in connecting students to people who are doing exceptional jobs in this area.
